The 2020 BMW Z4 Roadster is a premium 2-seater open-topped sports car. This is now the second year of the second-generation Z4. The previous version had a retractable hard top, the new Z4 comes with a power-folding fabric roof. The 2020 Toyota Supra and BMW Z4 share the same platform, these two cars also share key components like infotainment, safety, and most importantly, engines. Pop the hood of either the Z4 or Supra, and you’ll find the same turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six in both cars.

The Z4 M40i is powered by BMW’s B58 engine, a turbocharged inline-six producing 382 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. The new model gains 47 hp over its predecessor. Z4 sDrive30i has a turbocharged 2.0-liter/4-cylinder engine developing 255 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque.

Engage launch mode and the Z4 sDrive30i will sprint from a standstill to 100 kmph in a respectable 5.2 seconds. In the Z4 M40i, that same sprint takes just 3.9 seconds. Though there’s a big difference in performance, there isn’t in fuel economy: EPA ratings are 24/32/27 mpg city/highway/combined for the 30i, 24/31/26 mpg for the M40i.

The Z4 features a very smart-looking dash layout, with individual controls for the climate system. A rearview camera and power mirrors are also included, along with keyless entry, welcome lights, and push-to-start. Auto wipers and optional adaptive headlights are included along with adaptive LED taillights. Dynamic cruise control can also be had, as can blind-spot monitoring, lane departure warning and parking assist. Frontal collision warning with automatic braking and pedestrian detection are also fitted. The folding hardtop is electrically stowed and can be brought back up in 10 seconds at speeds of up to 31 mph.
