What are the available choices for a customer opting for a capable off-roader. Yes..there are many… ranging from cheap but trustworthy Jimny to heavy weights like Toyota Land Cruiser, Nissan Patrol or more luxurious Mercedes G wagon.
But there are many more little or unknown auto makers manufacturing equally capable machines. Say for example Ulyanovsk Automobile Plant (UAZ) motors of Russia and its UAZ Hunter Expedition.
UAZ established in 1941 is best known for UAZ-469, the military utility vehicle used worldwide during Soviet era. UAZ motors, specialised in manufacturing bare bone off-roaders has launched an updated version of its popular SUV, UAZ Hunter Expedition. It’s design dates back to 1970’s and was originally made for Russian Military.
For 2020, the UAZ Hunter Expedition is equipped with a 2.7 litre four cylinder engine producing a meagre 134.6 hp and 217 Nm of torque. The four pot manages to accelerate from 0-100 in 13.2 secs and speed tops out at 130 Kmph. Optional is a diesel power train rated at 114 hp from a 2.2 litre CRDi engine. Power is channeled through a 5-speed manual transmission. 90% of available torque is utilized between 2,000 to 4,500 rpm.
Hunter Expedition offers few extras although it’s design is focused on outdoor lifestyle like heated front seats and water proof seat fabric. It is is equipped with BF Goodrich all terrain off-road tires, a roof rack and ladder, steering gear protection, powered front and rear bumpers for winch and towing eyelets.
The 4×4 system is robust with a rear differential lock. Front suspension is a dependent coil system and leaf springs at the rear.
