Yamaha started producing its first 4-stroke enduro in 1976 and it was named XT500. The bike became an instant success and Yamaha made significant changes to the XT500 throughout its life.

Powered by a 499cc SOHC 4 stroke producing 32 hp and 29 lb-ft of torque XT500 was a road bike with excellent off-road capabilities. XT series were popular in rally racing. A modified XT500 won 500cc motocross world championship in 1977.
